CASTLE AND TOWER OF ST. NICOLA

Point of interest no. 2

In the small seaside village of San Nicola l’Arena stands a castle. It was built near the sea at the behest of the Crispo family in order to defend the territory around the 12th century. The cylindrical tower is located at the center of the courtyard, enriched by a final terrace and containing, inside, three circular rooms, connected thanks to a staircase. One can also notice three smaller towers, linked by a terrace used for the sentries’ patrol and equipped with artillery made up of seven cannons. Currently the castle is used for wedding receptions and various shows.

TOURIST PORT

Point of interest no. 3

In recent years, efforts have been made to enhance with some services the natural tourist vocation of the seaside village which, with its well-equipped tourist harbor, is a destination for many sailors and motor boaters navigating the Mediterranean. A port that has nothing to envy, in terms of facilities and services, to others located in the rest of Italy. The small harbor of S. Nicola L’Arena is protected by two long breakwaters oriented roughly northeast: on the inner side of the windward breakwater, two small piers branch off toward the southeast. On both outer breakwaters there are numerous floating docks that can accommodate about 800 berths. Today San Nicola L’Arena has a protected and well-equipped marina for every boating need, where it is possible to rent inflatables and boats, or moor your own vessel.
