The Trabia Medlar
The medlar tree found in the Trabia area belongs to the Eriobotrya japonica family.
The scientific name provides information about its provenance, not its origin. The medlar tree arrived in Sicily from Japan around the mid-1800s.
It is a perennial plant with dark and pale green lanceolate leaves. The numerous, small flowers are white and are borne in panicles (called scocche). The fruits grow here, varying greatly in size and color, from pale yellow to orange.
Several species of medlar are grown in Trabia: the most important are the Trabia Red Medlar, the Trabia Nespolone, and the Sanfilippara.
The Trabia Red Medlar is a medium-small, rounded fruit with a deep orange color. It is sweet when ripe, has a medium-thick rind, and firm flesh.
The Trabia medlar is a large, elongated fruit with a yellow-orange color. Its rind is very thick and its pulp firm.
The Sanfilipparo medlar takes its name from a family from Trabia who traded this fruit throughout Sicily and Italy. Its characteristics are similar to those of the Trabia medlar.
The medlar season begins with the Red Medlar, which begins in late March-April, and continues with the Trabia medlar and Sanfilippara in June. After harvesting, which is done strictly by hand, the product is processed in the warehouses, sorted, and packaged in crates called "Protò," which are sold nationwide.
The Trabia medlar is used to make numerous fine gourmet products, such as Nespolino liqueur, medlar jam, which is used extensively, especially in confectionery, and "Nespole Sciroppate" (Nespole in Syrup).
The medlar festival was founded in 1979 to promote not only the agricultural product and its derivatives, but everything that characterizes the Trabia community, from history to culture, from craftsmanship to folklore.
